“Atmospheric Waves” seeks original concepts and ideas for sound art works that respond to the wind and climate conditions of Liepaja on the western coast of Latvia. “Atmospheric Waves” is a festival dedicated to embracing the many aspects of wind through the diverse fields of sound art, public engagement and sensorial cultures of listening.

The “Atmospheric Waves” exhibition will take the form of 5 selected installations and/or interactive (digital) artworks that will be available to the public, for the “Liepaja – European Capital of Culture 2027” programme. The installation projects should clearly address the core themes of  “Atmospheric Waves”. Whether it is through aeolian effects or sonification of the wind and climate conditions of Liepaja, we want to encourage listening as a way of learning and knowing about local climate.

“Atmospheric Waves” aims to recognize the diversity of artistic approaches and relations that have influenced the broad concept of sound art in recent decades. This includes shared crossovers from new media art, sound studies, new music, sculpture, architecture and design. Developments in technology such as low power computing, remote sensing and data monitoring have also increased potential connections between artistic practices and the climate and natural sciences. In addition to this, the expanding fields of ‘sensory studies’ within humanities and the social sciences continue to raise important questions about how we relate to our environments. In short, we are open to ideas and collaborative efforts from far reaching fields that communicate the key themes of “Atmospheric Waves” through creative and artistic projects.

We encourage and will work closely with the selected artists to seek any additional funding and support opportunities for their participation in “Atmospheric Waves”.
